FAQ and Extras
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SEEING A COUNSELLOR AND A PSYCHOLOGIST?
A counsellor holds a diploma or degree in counselling and is registered with a professional body (e.g., APA, PACFA). Counsellors typically offer short-to-medium term emotional support and practical strategies to help individuals navigate life’s challenges such as stress, grief, relationship issues, identity concerns, and transitions.
A psychologist has completed further university training and is registered with AHPRA. Psychologists may also conduct formal assessments and support people with more complex mental health conditions.
WHO MIGHT BENEFIT FROM SEEING A COUNSELLOR?
Counselling is ideal for individuals who:
- Do not require a diagnosis or formal assessment
- Are not eligible for a Mental Health Care Plan or who have used their rebated sessions
- Are waiting to see a psychologist and need interim support
- Would benefit from guidance, coping strategies and emotional support for everyday life stressors.
